Friday's Thank You Notes #17 (9/30/11) and CTRL+C and CTRL+V #7

A double feature!!

l make a list of serious and silly thank you's (a la Late Night) and post a picture of one of my handmade thank you cards every Friday--Friday's Thank You Notes #17 (9/30/11)

I don't have a thank you card to share, but I do have a flower.

Have a happy Friday and a nice weekend!!!
A little flower created from the three checkered rolls of tape below. Maybe I can make a wreath one day.
THANK YOU...
-dollar bills that go into a vending machine on the first try.

-perfectly crisp bills that do not go into a vending machine no matter how many times you try.

-times when a person enjoys something I've recommended. Well, it may be because I undersell most things, but still! It makes me feel like I have good taste.

-acquaintances who give a little too much information about themselves. I just came to get a cup of hot chocolate, but if you want to talk about your  issues...um...okay...I'll just sip my hot cocoa and sympathize uncomfortably.

-funny-sounding laughs, for being funnier than the joke.

-times when you're the one out of bunch of people who can successfully twist open a jar. Sure everyone else helped loosen it, but who opened it?

-for reading! Have a nice weekend. Tomorrow is October.

CTRL+C and CTRL+V #6

"Cut and Paste"
I'm trying to do collage work inspired by photographs, advertisements, themes, and quotes. If based on photos or ads, they won't look identical to the original work (partly mainly because I don't have the skills), but I also kind of want them to be interpretative art pieces instead of just copies.

I added strips of masking tape to a glass jar to make a pencil/pen holder. It's not really a collage, but there was cutting and pasting involved.

It found a  new home.

Other Works of Art--creative videos, wine labels, masking tape

Blogger just came up with Dynamic Views, seven new templates to view blogs. They're all aesthetically pleasing, but the sidebar and most widgets won't work with them so I think I'll keep this format for now. Maybe I'll change it tomorrow as a test run? This is what it could look like.

Now, on to other works of art...

"The solution works on 2 levels, both of which utilize the brand name. As a front label, Back Label appears backwards, however when the bottle is rotated and the label becomes a back label, the brand name appears correctly. As the wine is consumed Back Label becomes clearer as the magnification decreases."

Friday's Thank You Notes #16 (9/23/11)

l make a list of serious and silly thank you's (a la Late Night) and post a picture of one of my handmade thank you cards every Friday. Have a happy Friday and a fantastic weekend!!!

Today is the first day of autumn!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stick figures are my specialty.

THANK YOU...
-Netflix, or should I say Netflix and Qwikster. If anything, shouldn't the red-enveloped DVD delivery service still be named Netflix and the newer-ish streaming service be renamed Qwikster? Why the two separate websites?

-conversation robbers, for always somehow tying any conversation topic to themselves.
"Oh, you went to Antarctica?! That's nice. Speaking of Antarctica, there was one time I was in the grocery store buying ice cream and..."

-random people I've never met who comment on my posts and/or check mark the little boxes. I wonder what it'd be like to meet all of these random people and give a big thanks. I mean, if you took time to read a blog primarily about corny, dorky, cutesy greeting cards you're probably a very pleasant person.

-PKD ("phone, keys, wallet" a mantra my friends and I used to have), for reminding me of the three key items I need to take with me anywhere I go. Too bad I forgot my wallet yesterday (but strangely had my Metro card) and took a subway, realized my stupidity, and took the subway back home. Is work sucking away all of my brain cells?

-forgetfulness, for...never mind. Forget about it.

-for reading!

Other Works of Art: Ghostly Greetings (die-cut cardstock)

I found the most adorable thing today at Michael's: Halloween-themed designs for card decorating.
O M G.
One hundred twenty pieces.
One hundred twenty pieces of delight.
Frankenstein's monster could never be more adorable.
These are the different types of designs included in each pack.
All of the pieces spread out.
Fiddled with the camera settings to make it more Halloween-like (i.e. I have no life)

Autumn Coffee

As mentioned almost a year (eep!!) ago I still don't like coffee, but I still like the idea of coffee. Since it's the first day of autumn this Friday (eep again!) I thought I'd start making coffee cards again. This card was actually a lot of fun to make.

Oh, autumn.
-reds, oranges, and yellows
-the crisp air
-apples
-HALLOWEEN (duh)-->my first one in NYC!!!
            -candy, costumes, ghosts
-pumpkins, hay, leaves
-Thanksgiving!

OHMYGOSH, I am so excited.

Friday's Thank You Notes #15 (9/16/11)

l make a list of serious and silly thank you's (a la Late Night) and post a picture of a handmade thank you card every Friday. Have a happy Friday and a fantastic weekend!!!

THANK YOU...
-fine print. I should have skimmed over you, but my lazy butt did not and now you're giving me a big "I told you so."

-breakfast for dinner. Sometimes you have to stimulate your brain with different things.

-pizza. Piping hot or as cold leftovers. Both are delicious in my book!

-people who hold the door open for me even when I'm thirty feet away, for making me run to you. Well, I guess I do that too. Never mind.

-doors that push even though the handle is clearly for pulling.

Polymerase Chain Reaction

Okay, this card is an uber nerdy card.
Front of the card
It looks like the screen of a Veriti, a PCR machine manufactured by ABI.
The screen usually shows the temperatures and times of each PCR cycle.
This "screen" shows an average work day.
The inside of the card.
A 96-well plate (or a 384-well plate) gets placed inside of a
Veriti, so I created a 96-well plate with the word "HI"
filled in.
It's a pop-up card!

Here is what the actual machine looks like.
It's a very good machine in case you were thinking of purchasing one  :)

Toy Story 3 envelope

My 2011 Disney calendar is going to become obsolete in a few months, so I've been creating cute Disney envelopes from the past months. Here is my favorite from the month of August.

Such a great movie.

Other Works of art: Cartoonists Remember

"'People turn to the comics for a laugh, but they also turn to the comics for reflection on the world around them. I think the reason people love them in the first place is because they remind them of themselves, or they remind them of someone they know. It's the reason people clip them out and put them on their refrigerators. With that spirit in mind, the comics have a role to play in the national discourse -- the conversation that's going on. And, frankly, the only thing we're going to be talking about this coming Sunday -- and already in the days leading up to it -- is the 10th anniversary of 9/11.'"
-Brendan Burford, comics editor for King Features Syndicate

"On a day when the entire world was reflecting on the events of September 11, 2001, the comics community joined forces to honor the occasion with a moving display of solidarity and remembrance...Some convey sadness, while others embody hope, fortitude and faith. All are sensitively crafted and beautifully poignant in their own unique, thoughtful and appropriate way."
-Cartoonists Remember

Please look at the above website that features a slideshow of the various comic strips.
Art can be so powerful.

I wish this envelope was edible.

This image is a larger version of the Send a Hello (Forever) product.
Afar, the travel magazine, has saved me again! This magazine contains the prettiest, most colorful photographs imaginable. Doesn't this envelope look absolutely delicious?

I am hungry. I will now eat.

Before I do that look at these amazing Pixar stamps! I thought the Go Green stamps were nice, but these Pixar stamps are even better!!

Friday's Thank You Notes #14 (9/09/11)

l make a list of serious and silly thank you's (a la Late Night) and post a picture of a handmade thank you card every Friday. Have a happy Friday and a fantastic weekend.

I love my heart hole puncher.

heartfelt har har
THANK YOU...

-to the moment you finally remember the name or word that's been on the tip of your tongue all day. Too bad you remember waaaayyy after and it's usually when doing something completely different like tying your shoelaces.

-to moments when a subway door stops right in front of you. Only to have to move to make room for the people on the subway who have to get off.

-candle stores, for overwhelming me with so many different scents at once. I wonder if that's how dogs feel on a daily basis.

-mosquito bites. I really appreciate you.

-for reading this. Have a nice weekend!

Lily

Here is what the inside of the card from yesterday looks like! I have a friend who likes lilies so I made her a birthday card with a pop up lily! Where, you ask, did I learn such skills? Oh, a YouTube video

The pink paper is really pretty and I really love the light blue textured paper in the background.

24

A friend is turning 24! It just occurred to me that I could have made it Jack Bauer themed which would have been cool. I will finish the inside of the card by tomorrow.

It looks kind of cool with this see-through
checkered envelope!

Other Works of Art: Dalton Ghetti

WOW.

I came across Dalton Ghetti's work of pencil art here and it has left me absolutely speechless! Ghetti, a carpenter, creates mini pieces of art on the tips of pencils by carving the graphite with razor blades, sewing needles, and sculpting knives.

Prepare to be amazed.

Other Works of Art: Mini Mini Hug-Cards

Happy Monday and a happy Labor Day for those in the United States!

Here are some penguin shaped cards from Japan!
Mini Mini Hug-Cards
A message can be written on the belly once the flippers are unfolded. Aww.

I put one to good use.

Friday's Thank You Notes #13 (9/02/11)

Okie dokie, it's back!

l make a list of serious and silly thank you's (a la Late Night) and post a picture of a handmade thank you card every Friday. Have a happy Friday and a fantastic weekend.

 THANK YOU...

-Have a nice day!
  You too!
conversations for making me incorrectly "you too" someone.
Examples:
*Hotel receptionist: Enjoy your stay at our hotel!
      Me: You too!
*Movie theater ticket collector: Enjoy the movie!
      Me: You too!
    *Wait staff: Enjoy your meal!
      Me: You too!

-those times when you see someone you know, say, "How are you?" at the exact same time , and awkwardly try to figure out who responds first.

-those times when you wake up before the alarm clock. Who just beat the system? Yeah, that's right.

-those times when I can actually calculate something in my head, for assuring me that I don't always have to rely on calculators. Just occasionally.

-times when you really have to walk across a hallway to get somewhere, but two people are standing against both walls having a serious conversation.

-people who break the spine of paperback books. Whyyyyyy? That's like letting me borrow a DVD and telling me it's ok to have a cat scratch it.

-for reading this! Have a nice weekend!

More need for dorky and nerdy cards.

Here is what my previous lab looked like except the picture of a frog was on the door and the giant blue water bath machine didn't look nearly as ancient.

I need more ideas for dorky, nerdy cards. Hmm.
